AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Freshman forward Glenn Robinson III and junior guard Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 21 points apiece, lifting Michigan to a 71-56 victory over South Dakota State in a second-round NCAA Tournament South Region game at The Palace on Thursday.
Robinson's point total equaled his career high for fourth-seeded Michigan (26-7), which was upset as a No. 4 seed by Ohio in its tournament opener last season. The Wolverines advanced to play the winner of Thursday's VCU-Akron game in the third round on Saturday.
The duel between dynamic point guards never materialized. Michigan sophomore Trey Burke, the Big Ten Player of the Year, scored six points on 2-for-12 shooting. Senior guard Nate Wolters, the Jackrabbits' all-time leading scorer, was held to 10 points while shooting 3-for-14.
Burke briefly left the game with 11:01 remaining after hitting the back of his head on the court going for a rebound. He returned with 9:23 left after an examination.
Brayden Carlson's 20 points paced 13th-seeded South Dakota State (25-10), the Summit League champion.
Burke found Robinson for a pair of corner 3-pointers to open the second half, giving Michigan a 36-26 lead. Robinson made another long range shot from the right wing to nudge the advantage to 41-30.
A Carlson basket cut it to 49-43 before the Wolverines reeled off eight unanswered points, capped by a Hardaway 3-pointer, to regain control. Michigan's lead remained in double digits from that point.
Hardaway's long-range prowess in the first half allowed the Wolverines to overcome Burke's 0-for-7 shooting and take a 30-26 halftime lead. South Dakota State had an early six-point lead, but Hardaway hit four 3-pointers to change the momentum. Wolters shot just 2-for-8 before the break, but Carlson came to his team's rescue, scoring 16 first-half points.
