VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) -- Jakob Gollon scored a career-high 37 points as Mercer squeaked out a 117-108 triple-overtime victory over Valparaiso Friday night.
There were 23 leads changes and the score was tied 17 times as neither team could gain the advantage until Mercer (5-3) finally outscored Valparaiso (4-4) in the third overtime 16-7.
Valparaiso had a chance for the win but missed two layups at the end of the first overtime.
A Bobby Capobianco layup with 17 seconds remaining in double overtime tied the score at 101. Monty Brown missed a potential go-ahead tip-in that would have given Mercer the win.
The Bears scored nine unanswered points in the final overtime to claim the victory.
Three players on each team had a career-high scoring on the night - Bud Thomas (23) and Ike Nwamu (14) for Mercer. LaVonte Dority (31), Capobianco (23) and Lexus Williams (15) had career highs for Valparaiso.
