Masters Week - Fore the Dawgs

Dave McMahon, Staff
GA Varsity

It's Masters week and four former Georgia golfers will attempt to win the Green Jacket and the first major of the current PGA season. So have yourself a pimento cheese sandwich and a reasonably priced beer and learn a little more about some former Dawgs as they attempt to make history at Augusta National.

•• Russell Henley just made the field. Henley was in third place and four strokes back after three rounds last week at the Shell Houston Open. Henley fought fierce winds and shot an incredible 65 and won by three strokes. Henley had 10 birdies on Sunday compared to 17 combined in the first three rounds. This was his third career PGA Tour victory for the Macon, Georgia native, but a very important one as it allowed him to play this week in Augusta.

2011 Team Co-Captain

•• While it was Henley who won last week on the PGA Tour, it was former Bulldog Hudson Swafford who won back in January at CareerBuilder Challenge. He had 26 birdies in the four rounds that week including three straight birdies on four separate occasions. Swafford has been hot lately. Last week he had another top-10 by finishing sixth in Houston and his previous event he was tied for 10th. This will be his first Masters appearance for the big man from Tallahassee, Florida.

•• Kevin Kisner has had a very good season. He has played in 10 PGA Tour events and not only has he made the cut in nine of them, but he has six top-25 finishes and three top-10s. Kisner finished tied for second at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He had a chance to win, but had to settle for his fifth career runner-up finish. In the last 24 rounds in a PGA Tour events, he has shot 70 or better 18 times. This will be his second straight year playing The Masters.

•• While Bubba Watson didn’t have all the big stats while playing for Georgia, he has certainly made up for it as a professional. Watson has nine career PGA Tour wins and has finished second or third 19 other times. He is one of 17 golfers to win The Masters at least twice. The Bagdad, Florida native hasn’t played on the tour much this season so far and his FedEx Cup ranked currently sits at 123rd, but his world golf ranking continues to be in the top-20.
