Manager Ozzie Guillen is content with the Marlins using a four-man bench and having 16 pitchers.
"The only thing we can't do, we cannot fight anybody," he said, joking.
Guillen is happy the Marlins this month have only called up pitchers A.J. Ramos, Tom Koehler and Dan Jennings. Guillen said he is against promoting minor leaguers who don't deserve a September call-up.
"If you don't earn your way to the big leagues, you shouldn't be in the big leagues in our situation," he said.
"If you are in Washington's situation, yes, I would call everybody up just in case I'm going to need it. They're in a pennant race and they're fighting for something."
The Marlins went into Saturday 17 games under .500 with 17 games to go. But Guillen said he likes the attitude of his players, especially his starting pitchers.
"They want to pitch," he said before Miami's 4-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday.
"I appreciate that with the players. They know we are not in the pennant race. They know we are done and they want to continue to go out there and perform. That's very professional. Somebody might come in with an excuse and shut it down. They don't. They want to go out there as long as they can."
