Seattle Mariners catcher Jesus Montero, recently sent down to the minors, will have knee surgery and miss four to six weeks, the Seattle Times reported Saturday.
It is not clear how the injury happened. Montero was examined by team doctor Edward Khalfayan on Friday.
Montero, 23, was sent to Class AAA on May 22 after batting just .208. He is hitting .250 (7-for-28) with three doubles, a triple and two RBI in seven games with Tacoma.
He is being used as a first baseman in Tacoma as the Mariners are not planning to further develop him as a catcher.
