Marcus Peters wants to speak in support of Marshawn Lynch
The NFL served Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch with a one-game suspension for shoving a ref in the chaos of a fight during Thursday night’s Raiders-Chiefs game. Now, the Chiefs player he was apparently seeking to help is hoping to speak on his behalf.
Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters has said he would like to speak on Lynch’s behalf during Lynch’s appeal hearing, if schedules can coordinate. During a scrum that involved Peters, Lynch ran down the sideline and grabbed a ref by the jersey before releasing him.
Peters had just been flagged for hitting Raiders QB Derek Carr late, which drew the attention of several Raider linemen. That led to the peculiar scene of Lynch racing to defend a player on the opposing team from his own teammates.
However, Raiders offensive lineman Donald Penn said he understood Lynch’s motivations. “Marshawn was just trying to get his cousin and make sure his cousin was safe, because Marshawn saw three big O-linemen going after his cousin, and Marshawn knows how we get down as offensive linemen,” Penn told ESPN on Friday. “And he knows how his cousin gets down, so I think he was just trying to stop something from getting bigger than it was. He didn’t know if a punch was going to get thrown or if it was going to blow up. I think he was just trying to get in there to get his cousin to the sideline, get things safe, get us back playing.”
So far this season, Lynch has rushed 72 times for 266 yards, a 3.7 yards-per-carry average, with two touchdowns.
