CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Dimitry Akanda-Coronel scored 27 points, including three in overtime as Maine defeated Middle Tennessee 89-85 Sunday in the first game of the Dr. Pepper Classic.
Maine (2-9) snapped an eight-game losing streak, and will play either tournament host Chattanooga or Grand Canyon in the championship game Monday.
Akanda-Coronel opened overtime with a three-point play to give Maine a 77-74 lead. Shawn Jones made two free throws to pull Middle Tennessee (8-5) within one, 77-76 before Maine closed with a 12-9 run.
Jones hit one of two free throws to give Middle Tennessee a 74-72 lead with 1:43 remaining in regulation. Jones then blocked Troy Reid-Knight's layup, but Maine's Kilian Cato grabbed the rebound and scored on a dunk to tie the game at 74. Kerry Hammonds II missed a jumper for Middle Tennessee, and both teams had turnovers in the final minute to send the game into overtime.
