Hall of Fame coach John Madden spoke at the memorial service for longtime broadcast partner Pat Summerall at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas.
Summerall, a former NFL kicker who went into play-by-play announcing, died Tuesday of cardiac arrest at a Dallas hospital at age 82.
Summerall and Madden called NFL games together for 22 years.
"He is the voice of the NFL," Madden said. "To me, he wasn't a braggart. To me, he was John Wayne."
Summerall played in the NFL for 10 years and broadcasted a television-record 16 Super Bowls.
"This is the third good-bye, the toughest," Madden said. "Goodbye, Pat. Rest in peace. I love you."
Madden and Summerall also said goodbye after their last game on CBS and their final game on Fox after Super Bowl XXXVI.
