Defenseman Olli Maatta will remain with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the rest of the season, the team announced.
Maatta, the 22nd pick in the 2012 draft, has a goal and two assists in nine games.
The Penguins had to declare whether Maatta would stay in Pittsburgh or return to the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League.
"Based on his play, we believe this is the best decision for Olli and the Penguins," Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero said.
Maatta, 19, is not eligible for the American Hockey League. Returning him to the CHL would have delayed the start of his three-year, entry-level contract.
If the Penguins opt to send Maatta back to the London team after his 10th game Friday, Maatta would be ineligible for recall and this season would count as the first year of his contract.
