PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Christian Thomas, Jeff White and Matt O'Leary scored 14 points apiece and Loyola (Illinois) edged SIU-Edwardsville 73-72 at the Portland State Tournament on Sunday.
Loyola (IL) shot 57 percent from the field and made 42 percent of 3-point attempts while SIUE shot 51 percent overall and 42 percent from beyond the arc in a game where each team lead by no more than 5 points.
SIUE (1-5) led 35-33 at the half following several lead changes. That trend continued into the second half with Loyola (3-4) calling a timeout while leading 71-70 with 2 minutes left. Both teams missed key shots and free throw opportunities in the intense final minutes, but Devon Turk's lay-up at 1:20 was all Loyola needed to hang on for the win.
Donivine Stewart led the Cougars with 22 points and Michael Messer added 14.
