Brooklyn, N.Y. -- Senior guard C.J. Garner scored a career-high 31 points, helping LIU Brooklyn secure another NCAA Tournament bid with a 91-70 victory over Mount St. Mary's in the Northeast Conference championship game Tuesday at the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center.
Garner made 13 of 17 field-goal attempts for LIU Brooklyn (20-13), which will make its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance after becoming the first team in conference history to win the NEC Tournament three years in a row. Junior guard Sam Prescott scored 21 points for Mount St. Mary's (18-14).
Mount St. Mary's jumped out to an early 13-6 lead and went up 20-12 on a 3-pointer by Prescott with 12:56 remaining in the opening period, but LIU Brooklyn responded with an 11-2 run to take a 23-22 lead with 10:42 left. The Mountaineers momentarily reclaimed the lead, but the Blackbirds scored the last six points of the half to take a 35-31 lead into the locker room at the break.
The Blackbirds extended their lead in the second period, opening the half with an 11-2 run to take a 46-33 lead with 15:36 to play. They led by as many as 23 points late in the game.
