Gabe Knutson scored 28 points Thursday, leading Lehigh to its eighth consecutive win, a 90-75 decision over North Texas at the Super Pit in Denton, Texas.
The Mountain Hawks' 9-2 start is their best over 11 games since the 1925-26 season. The eight-game winning streak is Lehigh's longest since the same season, when the team won its final 11 games.
Lehigh prevailed Thursday without star senior guard C.J. McCollum, the nation's leading scorer at 24.9 points per game. He was a late scratch, missing a game for the first time this season due to an ankle injury suffered in practice earlier this week.
A number of NBA scouts were on hand to watch what was originally billed as a battle between marquee stars McCollum and North Texas 6-foot-8 sophomore standout Tony Mitchell. The showdown didn't happen.
Instead, it was the 6-9 Knutson who grabbed everyone's attention, scoring 19 in the first half on 7-of-9 shooting from field and 3-for-4 from 3-point range. Lehigh went into halftime leading 52-33 thanks to a Mackey McKnight 3-pointer off the dribble two steps beyond halfcourt at the buzzer.
McKnight finished with a career-high 25 points, and he added seven assists.
North Texas (5-7) never got close after halftime.
Mitchell led the Mean Green with 22 points after sitting out the first two minutes of the game for violating team rules. He hit North Texas' first 3-point shot in two games with just over seven minutes left. Alzee Williams added 20 for the Mean Green.
