Lehigh opened its Patriot League season with an 88-81 double-overtime victory over Colgate Thursday night at Colgate's Cotterell Court in Hamilton, N.Y.
Lehigh improved to 8-6 overall, and it was the Mountain Hawks' sixth victory in their last seven games. Colgate fell to 6-6 and lost its second straight in double-overtime.
Lehigh freshman center Tim Kempton led the Mountain Hawks with 25 points, on 11-of-17 shooting, and 13 rebounds. Senior guard Mackey McKnight added 18 for Lehigh, including seven free throws in the second overtime to seal the victory.
Sophomore forward Jesse Chuku also added 18 points for Lehigh, including a big three-pointer in the second overtime that gave Lehigh the lead for good, 75-74, with 3:41 left to play.
Colgate was paced by senior forward Murphy Burnatowski's game-high 26 points. Junior guard Damon Sherman-Newsome chipped in with 16 for the Raiders.
With 27 seconds left in regulation, McKnight tied the game at 62-62 with a three-pointer.
Lehigh snapped a three-game losing streak in Patriot League openers on the road. The last time the Mountain Hawks won a league opener on the road was Jan. 10, 2007, a 71-61 victory at Navy.
