Before we get started with this week's picks there might be a slim chance that Edmonton's David Perron is available in your league. He's up to 58% ownership in Yahoo! leagues after he was held in only 43% of fantasy pools a couple of weeks ago. If he's still sitting there then he should be snatched up immediately.
With that out of the way, let's take a look at this week's edition of Waived Wired, where a number of left wingers make an appearance:
Mark Giordano (CAL) - D - Owned in 40% of Yahoo! leagues
The Flames captain missed 18 games with an ankle injury, but he made an immediate impact when he returned to the lineup in Wednesday's 4-1 win over Phoenix. Giordano notched a power-play goal and a shorthanded assists in the contest. He followed that up with five shots and four penalty minutes in Friday's loss to Colorado. Before he was injured, Giordano had two goals and seven helpers in eight games. He logs big minutes for Calgary and sees a great deal of time with the man advantage. Grab him quickly if he's available.
Justin Faulk (CAR) - D - Owned in 19% of Yahoo! leagues
If Giordano isn't available then Faulk is another defenseman who is worth targeting. The 21-year-old has experienced an offensive resurgence of late with two goals, eight points and a plus-6 rating in his past seven games. He got off to a slow start in 2013-14, which partially explains his low ownership rate, but Faulk possesses the talent to be a 40-point blueliner and he's on pace to challenge that mark this season.
Clarke MacArthur (OTT) - LW - Owned in 44% of Yahoo! leagues
MacArthur has firmly entrenched himself as a top-six forward with the Senators this year. He has played most of the season alongside Kyle Turris and Bobby Ryan, but was moved to a line with Jason Spezza recently. He already has more points in 28 games (22) with Ottawa than he did in 40 contests (20) as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs last season. MacArthur is on pace to hit the 60-point plateau for the second time in his career, which should warrant him more attention in standard leagues
Curtis McElhinney (CLM) - G - Owned in 12% of Yahoo! leagues
The Blue Jackets were rewarded for their faith in McElhinney when he pitched a 20-save shutout on Friday against Minnesota. Columbus is confident that he can hold the fort while Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky recovers from a groin injury. The club's number one keeper is slated to miss four-to-five weeks, so McElhinney will get plenty of starts in his absence. He excelled in the AHL last season and he's been solid in nine appearances this campaign, while sporting a .932 save percentage and a 2.02 GAA. He's been a popular addition already in most fantasy leagues and should serve as a decent injury replacement.
Mats Zuccarello (NYR) - LW - Owned in 12% of Yahoo! leagues
Zuccarello has run hot and cold so far this season and he's currently in the midst of a productive stretch. He has four goals and six assists in his last eight contests after a mini four-game pointless skid. Zuccarello started the year slowly with one goal in his first nine matches, but he's generally been a good fit alongside Brad Richards and Ryan Callahan. He has 20 points in 29 games and eight of them have come on the power play, which ranks him second the team. Zuccarello is worth taking a flier on in deeper leagues.
Tomas Tatar (DET) - C/LW - Owned in 4% of Yahoo! leagues
Last week, Tatar proclaimed that his confidence level was rising after he scored a goal and an assist in a dominating 6-1 victory over Boston. Turns out he wasn't blowing smoke. In his past three games, he has tallied three goals and added two assists. The 23-year-old forward has 13 points in 22 games and he's waited a long time to become an NHL regular. Tatar has played well on the Wings' third line and he gets second-unit power play minutes. He definitely has better long-term value than he does in the short term, but he's doing enough right now to deserve some attention.
Antoine Roussel (DAL) - LW - Owned in 3% of Yahoo! leagues
As my writing colleague Michael Finewax pointed out in The Week Ahead, Roussel made a name for himself last year when he collected 14 points and 85 penalty minutes in 39 games. In 2013-14, he ranks fifth in the NHL with 70 minutes in the sin bin entering Saturday's action. Roussel has six majors and two misconducts, so he can win penalty minute categories for you on his own if he gets riled up one week. He can also chip in offensively where he's contributed five goals and five assists in 27 games this year including eight points in his last 11 games. Fantasy owners who use penalty minutes as a category probably already have Roussel in their crosshairs, but his low ownership in Yahoo! leagues suggests that he's available in most leagues.
Nick Foligno (CLM) - LW - Owned in 5% of Yahoo! leagues
Foligno was in and out of the lineup last month because of health problems with his newborn daughter, but that issue appears to have settled and he's looked good on the ice in recent games for the Jackets. He is developing chemistry with red hot center Ryan Johansen and he's brought a physical presence to the team's top line. Foligno has 10 points and 25 penalty minutes in his last 12 games. He also has 65 hits in 23 contests. As a top-six forward, he has some fantasy merit so consider adding him deeper leagues.
