After having the rug pulled out from under him at UFC Fight Night 38 a couple weeks ago, Diego Brandao has a new bout scheduled.
Brandao was supposed to fight Will Chope at UFC Fight Night 38 on March 23 in Brazil, but Chope was pulled from the fight at the last minute when some of his past indiscretions caught up with him.
Brandao, however, has been re-scheduled and will face incoming RFA featherweight champion Brian Ortega at The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3 Finale on May 31 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Ortega and RFA officials confirmed the fight on Tuesday, although pen has yet to be put to paper.
“We tried to keep it a secret, I guess we can't anymore. You guys beat us to the punch,” said Ortega on Tuesday. “Rumors are true. We got called up to fight for the UFC. Nothing's official till we sign that contract, but I thought I'd let you guys know.”
Brandao (18-9) most recently fought at UFC 168 last October, when Dustin Poirier knocked him out. He had been hoping to get back on track at UFC Fight Night 38, but his fight was nixed the morning of the event.
Prior to the loss to Poirier, Brandao had been on a three-fight winning streak, looking like he was headed for a title shot.
Fighting primarily in the Southwestern United States, Ortega quietly worked his way to an unblemished 8-0 record. He made a quick rise on the RFA roster, submitting Jordan Rinaldi in his first fight for the promotion, and then went on to defeat Keoni Koch, brother of UFC fighter Erik Koch, to capture the bantamweight belt.
The TUF Brazil 3 Finale recently underwent a change to its headlining bout. Originally slated for coaches Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen to fight in the main event, the TUF Brazil 3 Finale is now headlined by a heavyweight fight between former champion Junior dos Santos and Stipe Miocic.
