New York Knicks rookie Iman Shumpert is out for the season after suffering a torn left ACL and lateral meniscus in the third quarter of the Knicks' 100-67 playoff loss to the Miami Heat on Saturday.
Shumpert was taken to a Miami hospital, where an MRI revealed the damage, the team announced. Shumpert is expected to miss 6-8 months.
He was injured while trying to change direction on a behind-the-back dribble. He clutched his knee and fell to the ground.
Shumpert, the 17th pick in last summer's draft, averaged 9.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.7 steals per game this season and was one of New York's key defenders.
"It hurts your spirits when you see your best defensive player go down like that," J.R. Smith told ESPN.com. "We have a lot of people and hopefully someone can step up for him."
