Two-thirds of new NC State basketball head coach Kevin Keatts’ assistant coaching staff has been revealed. The Wolfpack announced the hire of Takayo Siddle on Tuesday, a day after disclosing that former Virginia Tech head coach James Johnson would be on the staff.
Siddle, like Johnson, has a long background with Keatts. Siddle played for Keatts at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., and Siddle has been an assistant on Keatts’ staff for the past three seasons at UNC Wilmington. Siddle had been named the interim head coach at UNCW after Keats was hired at NC State.
“Takayo is a rising star in this profession with a great enthusiasm for the game,” said Keatts in a prepared statement released by the school. “He is a North Carolina native and knows the state very well. This is my third straight head coaching position where I have hired Takayo as a member of my staff.
“Obviously, I have tremendous respect for his coaching ability and the way he can mold our student-athletes. He is a tremendous addition to our staff.”
Siddle, a native of Eden, N.C., played at Gardner-Webb from 2005-09, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 2009. He worked as an assistant for Keatts the following year, and then was hired by Chris Holtmann at Gardner-Webb, where Siddle coached for four seasons. Holtmann is now the coach at Butler, leading the Bulldogs to a Sweet 16 this season.
When Keatts was hired at UNCW, Siddle was lured to join Keatts' initial staff. The two helped the Seahawks go 72-28 over three seasons and reach two NCAA Tournaments.
