Kevin Gregg: Wants to Close Staff

Update: The Cubs have no immediate plans to make Gregg their closer, but he told reporters that he would like an opportunity to fill the role, the Daily Herald reports. "For sure," Gregg said. "It's definitely what I've done in the past. Talking with those guys, it was a matter of bringing in some experience."

Recommendation: Cubs manager Dale Sveum ruled out the possibility of using his best reliever James Russell in the ninth inning, citing Russell's presence as the team's only left-hander in the bullpen after the decision to designate Hisanori Takahashi for assignment Tuesday. Gregg's past experience as a closer could ultimately lead him to chances sooner rather than later after Shawn Camp's meltdown Sunday, and the reluctance to give Carlos Marmol another shot in the ninth inning.
