Jonas Valanciunas earned his ninth double-double this season, scoring 16 points and registering 18 rebounds, to help the Toronto Raptors beat the New York Knicks, 95-83. Toronto (12-15) picked up the win after falling to the San Antonio Spurs on Monday.
Valanciunas finished 7-11 from the field, in a quality performance offensively. Other key players for Toronto included Kyle Lowry with 15 points and 11 assists, and John Salmons with 11 points and 5 rebounds. On 6-17 shooting (2-3 on 3-point attempts), in addition to going 4-5 from the free throw line, Andrea Bargnani put up 18 points for New York in the loss. He also tallied 12 rebounds. J.R. Smith contributed 17 points and 7 rebounds and Beno Udrih finished with 15 points and 10 assists.
Despite committing the fewest errors in the NBA (TO% of 12.7%), the Knicks struggled with 16 turnovers against a Raptors defense that causes the most (opponents' TO% of 27.6%). Poor shooting (eFG% of 44.3%) combined with sloppy ball-handling (TO% of 17.6) proved too much to overcome for the Knicks. On the season, they are 0-1 when posting an eFG% of worse than 45% while also giving the ball away on more than 17% of their possessions. The Raptors are 1-0 when coaxing their opponents into such substandard offensive showings.
New York (9-20) has now dropped consecutive games after losing to Oklahoma City on Wednesday.
Next up on Saturday, the Knicks get an opportunity for redemption against Raptors.
