Johan Santana: Likely Season-Ending Shoulder Setback Staff

Update: Santana has re-torn the anterior capsule in his pitching shoulder and could be heading for career-ending surgery, ESPN New York reports.

Recommendation: Santana started feeling discomfort in his shoulder recently, prompting the latest MRI which revealed the tear. He suffered the same injury in September of 2010 and missed the entire 2011 season and no pitcher has had this surgery twice. Santana's Mets' career has been pockmarked by injuries; this latest one comes in the fifth year of the six-year, $137.5 million extension he signed after the team acquired him from Minnesota. The Mets will likely exercise the $5.5 million buyout for 2014, making him a free agent, though that may matter little as he is likely to retire.
