Update: Mets manager Terry Collins said Monday that Santana (back) looks stronger throwing on flat ground, ESPNNewYork.com reports. "I told him already [Monday]: He looked better [Monday] than he did five days ago," Collins said. "I think the long-toss program is making strides."
Recommendation: Santana has been backed off mound work for now, but it's encouraging that he's making strides with his long-toss. The hope is that he'll get into Grapefruit League play by March 10 or 11, so he can log four spring starts and get ready for Opening Day. If he ends up starting the season on the DL, Jeremy Hefner and Collin McHugh are the likely candidates to replace Santana in the rotation.
