Coastal Carolina coach Joe Moglia announced he was stepping down Friday. He’ll be replaced as the team’s head coach by offensive coordinator Jamey Chadwell.

Moglia made the announcement in an open letter posted on Coastal’s site. The Sun Belt program went 5-7 in 2018.

While my contract continues through the next two seasons, I believe that it is truly in the best interest of our program for Coach Chadwell to have the responsibility now so that he and the staff can focus on the next two seasons and be ready to go in the future.

Our succession plan has been well thought out. I will stay on for the duration of my contract (June 2021) as Chairman of Athletics and will still have executive authority for football. Coach Chadwell will report to me and I will report to Dr. DeCenzo. I will do all I can to provide support to the program.

Moglia, 69, became the head coach at CCU in 2012 when the program was at the FCS level. Coastal Carolina transitioned to the top level of college football in 2016 and Moglia missed the 2017 season because of health issues.

Moglia may be most known for his unique route toward being an FBS head coach. He spent much of his professional life in the financial sector and was the CEO of TD Ameritrade from 2001-08. He left his position at TD Ameritrade and became a voluntary coach at Nebraska under Bo Pelini in 2009 and 2010. He coached a United Football League team in 2011 before he was hired as the head coach at Coastal.

His teams at Coastal went 56-22 and won 12 games in both 2013 and 2014.
