The New York Jets are sticking with Geno Smith at quarterback -- at least that's what the rookie says he was told Monday.
After being benched during during Sunday's loss to the Miami Dolphins, Smith apparently will be the starter this week against the Oakland Raiders. He said he received confirmation from Jets quarterback coach David Lee.
Smith acknowledged that the benching got his attention.
"If it was a tactic to wake me up or get me going, it definitely worked," Smith said.
Smith was sent to the bench after he threw an interception near the end of the first half and was 4 of 10 for 29 yards in a 23-3 loss to the Miami Dolphins.
The rookie has not thrown a touchdown pass in five straight games and the Jets' offense has just one touchdown in its last 36 possessions.
The alternatives at quarterback for the Jets (5-7), who have lost three straight games, are Matt Simms and veteran David Garrard, who has not played in a regular-season game since 2010 with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Sims replaced Smith in the game against the Dolphins.
