The New York Jets announced Sunday that outside linebacker Quinton Coples will have surgery on his ankle and will miss the rest of the preseason.
The team says Coples is out indefinitely.
The New York Daily News previously reported that Coples suffered a hairline fracture in his ankle and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks.
That timetable would allow Coples to return for the Jets' second regular-season game against the New England Patriots.
But with the team saying he is out indefinitely, it's uncertain when Coples will be back.
Antwan Barnes is expected to replace Coples in the starting lineup while he is sidelined.
