Jets' Goodson returns, is suspended for four games

The NFL suspended New York Jets running back Mike Goodson on Monday for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

Goodson had returned to the team on Monday after taking time to tend to a personal matter and was placed on the Active/Non-football Injury/Illness list.

"I've been away from the team to take care of some important personal things," Goodson said in a statement. "The time was helpful to me and now that I am back, I am going to do everything I can to contribute to the team. I appreciate all of the support from the Jets organization and I'm thankful to be back with my teammates."

The 26-year-old Goodson, who was signed to a three-year, $6.9 million contract in March, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and possession of handgun in May. The Jets had placed him on the Reserve/Did Not Report list when training camp opened in July.

Goodson will be eligible to return to the Jets' active roster on Sept. 30. He could see his first action on Oct. 7 when New York plays Atlanta.

The Jets responded to Goodson's return by issuing a statement:

"While we welcome Mike back to the organization, we have had direct conversations to make our expectations very clear as we work together to help him move forward in a positive manner, both on and off the field."

The Jets will allow Goodson to attend meetings and use the team's practice facility, but he won't be allowed to practice or play.
