ROCKLIN, Calif. (AP) -- Former Mets and White Sox manager Jerry Manuel is taking on a new challenge helping build a college program near where he grew up in Northern California.

William Jessup University, a private four-year college in the Sacramento area, announced Wednesday that it's starting a baseball team and Manuel will help launch the program in a director of baseball operations role.

Recruiting begins immediately. The Warriors will move from the NAIA to the Golden State Athletic Conference when they begin competition.

Mike Hankins is coach, with the 60-year-old Manuel helping make the hire. He will work behind the scenes and also hold clinics for his foundation.

The team is slated to begin training this fall and play its first game in the spring of 2015.

Manuel has a 704-684 career managerial record spanning nine seasons.
