Senior guard A.J. Davis came off the bench to score a season-high 27 points, leading James Madison to a 81-71 victory over William & Mary on Wednesday at the JMU Convocation Center in Harrisonburg, Va.
The Dukes (14-11, 8-4 Colonial Athletic Association) bounced back from a loss to George Mason to win for the fifth time in six games.
Davis came into the game ranked fifth on the team in scoring at 8.5 points per game. He made nine of 13 field-goal attempts against the Tribe, including seven of 10 from 3-point range.
Davis led three players who scored in double figures for the Dukes. Senior guard Devon Moore had 17 points and 12 assists, and freshman guard Andre Nation added 10 points.
Sophomore guard Marcus Thornton scored 22 points to lead William & Mary (9-13, 3-8), which has lost 10 of 12. Junior forward Tim Rusthoven had 11 points and nine rebounds. Junior forward Kyle Gaillard and junior guard Brandon Brit had 10 points apiece for the Tribe.
The game was tied 30-30 at halftime. James Madison took control early in the second half, outscoring William & Mary 8-0 over the first 3:30. Thornton made back-to-back 3-pointers to help the Tribe stay within striking distance, but the Dukes pulled away with a 9-2 run.
