Offensive tackle Luke Joeckel, the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft in April, signed a rookie contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday, the team announced.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Joeckel, a left tackle at Texas A&M, worked at right tackle during rookie minicamp and, according to reports, his performance was impressive. Eugene Morris is the starter at left tackle for the Jaguars.
The Jaguars are hoping that Joeckel helps shore up an offensive line that gave up the third-highest sack total in the NFL last season.
Joeckel was considered a potential No. 1 overall pick in the draft, but the Kansas City Chiefs passed on him and took offensive tackle Eric Fisher instead. The Jaguars nabbed Joeckel with the next selection.
During the minicamp, Joeckel worked on adjusting to playing the right side.
"I want to get on the field," he said. "I want to help my team win football games, whatever position it might be. If they wanted me to go play guard, I'd go play guard. I definitely would love to be a left tackle in the future, but whatever gets me on the field is what I'd do."
Second-round safety Johnathan Cyprien and third-round cornerback Dwayne Gratz (Connecticut) signed Tuesday with the Jags. Seventh-round cornerbacks Jeremy Harris and Demetrius McCray (signed earlier.
