The New York Islanders placed backup goaltender Rick DiPietro on waivers Friday.
The former No. 1 overall draft pick was 0-3 this season with a 4.09 goals-against average and .855 save percentage.
DiPietro has battled injuries since signing a 15-year contract with the Islanders in 2006, but he has been healthy this season. The Islanders were expected to send him to Bridgeport of the American Hockey League and recall goaltender Kevin Poulin to back up No. 1 goalie Evgeni Nabokov.
Since DiPietro, 31, was the first pick in the 2001 draft, he has posted a career record of 130-136-8 with an 2.87 GAA and a .902 save percentage.
DiPietro has eight years remaining on his contract with an average annual salary of $4.5 million.
