The New York Islanders have fired assistant coaches Scott Allen and Dean Chynoweth, making moves after the team finished in the basement of the Atlantic Division for the fifth consecutive season.
With video coordinator Ryan Ward leaving the team to take another position elsewhere, Doug Weight will be the only assistant returning to head coach Jack Capuano's staff for the 2012-2013 season. Weight, who also serves as a special assistant to general manager Garth Snow, became an assistant coach following the conclusion of his playing career at the end of the 2010-11 season.
Chynoweth, 43, was a first-round draft pick of the Islanders (13th overall) in 1987, and spent parts of seven seasons in the organization before being traded to Boston in 1995. He returned to Long Island as an assistant coach for the 2009-10 season. Allen, 46, also joined the coaching staff during that season.
The Islanders went 34-37-11 in 2011-12, their first full season under Capuano, who came over from the team's AHL affiliate in Bridgeport, Connecticut 15 games into the 2010-11 season. They have not made the playoffs since 2007.
