Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne broke a two-game losing streak by holding off Navy for a 68-63 win Wednesday in Fort Wayne, Ind.
The Midshipmen, who lost their third consecutive game, took a brief lead on consecutive 3-pointers from Thurgood Wynn and Brandon Venturini before the Mastodons scored 10 straight points to take a 60-54 lead with 4:34 remaining.
The Midshipmen closed the lead to 60-58 on a 3-pointer from Venturini with 2:06 to go, but the Mastodons hit two baskets and made four free throws in the waning moments to secure the win.
Luis Jacobo led IPFW with 22 points, shooting 8-for-14 from the field, including 5-for-9 on 3-point attempts.
Frank Gaines, who came into the game averaging 18.9 points per game to lead the Mastodons, had 17, and Joe Edwards added 15.
The Mastodons shot 50 percent (24 of 48), including 38 percent (8 of 21) on 3-pointers, while the Midshipmen shot 49 percent (23 of 47), including 53 percent (10 of 19) from behind the arc. Venturini and Worth Smith, each with 17 points, led the Midshipmen.
The Midshipmen raced out to an early 7-1 lead before the Mastodons settled into the game, tying it at 32 at halftime.
The win for IPFW avenges a 54-49 loss to the Midshipmen on Nov. 28 in Annapolis, Md.
