Infiniti wants needs a supercar. Something that makes heads turn, opens wallets and generates a real passion for the brand. But what Infiniti still can’t figure out is exactly what this halo car will be…or when it will even be ready.

Early reports suggested that a GT-R-base would we be fit underneath the supercar, but Infiniti CEO Johan de Nysschen was quick to dismiss the rumors and called for something a bit more tame. Now, as Infiniti sits amidst discussion of a range-topper- there’s still a lot of decisions yet to be finalized on exactly what’s going to hit showrooms.

“We are still evaluating the layout. It is still on the table for a decision. The same goes for the powertrain,” Infiniti Europe boss, Fintan Knight, told Autocar in a new report.

The final decision, Infiniti hopes, should be ready by 2018. Whether or not the halo car will resemble anything similar to the Essence or Emerg-e (pictured) concepts, remains to be seen.
