Top-ranked Indiana lost some of its depth when sophomore forward Austin Etherington broke his left kneecap Saturday night in a win over Central Connecticut State.
Etherington underwent season-ending surgery Sunday in Indianapolis, the school announced on its website.
"Anytime you lose a valued member of your program, it not only hurts the team, but also everyone's hearts," Indiana coach Tom Crean said in a statement. "Austin has been doing an excellent job improving and now we have to help him overcome this setback and move forward."
Crean later added on Twitter, "Austin Etherington was in a good frame of mind earlier today after surgery. He is handling this very well. He has a long road of rehab ahead."
Etherington averaged 1.9 points and 1.7 rebounds in 6.7 minutes during his seven games this season.
The Hoosiers (9-0) are off until a Saturday non-conference game at Butler.
