Guard Kelsey Barlow scored 17 points and University of Illinois-Chicago handed San Diego its first loss of the season 74-70 on Monday in the first round of the Global Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla.
Barlow, who played all 40 minutes, went 3-for-13 from the field but knocked down 10 of his 13 attempts from the free throw line. Guard Mark Brown added 13 for the Flames (2-3), while forward Jake Wiegand had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Gabe Snider had 11 points and knocked down three of his four 3-point attempts.
Guard Johnny Dee had 19 points to lead San Diego (5-1), but went 4-for-15 from the field and 3-for-13 from three-point range. The Toreros shot just 38.2 percent from the field and missed 19 of their 27 attempts from beyond the arc.
The Flames took advantage of their inside strength to bully the Toreros on the boards. Illinois-Chicago won the rebounding battle 40-34 and finished with 13 offensive rebounds.
The Flames will play Louisiana Tech, which knocked off UNC Greensboro 99-62, in the semifinals on Tuesday. San Diego will face North Carolina-Greensboro.
