I'll Have Another wins Kentucky Derby by 1 1/2 lengths

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - I'll Have Another shot out of the final turn, overtaking pacesetter Bodemeister in the race's final moments to win the 138th Kentucky Derby by 1 1/2 lengths Saturday.

The winning time on the decidedly fast 1 1/4-mile track was 2:01.83, the fastest since 2008.

I'll Have Another, which went off at 15-1 odds with rookie Derby jockey Mario Gutierrez, is the first in history to win the Run for the Roses out of the 19th starting post. Dullahan finished third followed by Went the Day Well.

Winning trainer Doug O'Neill won his first Derby in only his third entry. His previous two entrants raced in 2007, when Great Hunter finished 13th and Liquidity was 14th. It was also the first win for owner Paul Reddam.

Bodemeister went off at 5-1 odds, just behind favorite Union Rags at 9-2. Union Rags finished seventh, never challenging the front of the pack.

Bodemeister trainer Bob Baffert will have to wait another year for another shot at becoming the fourth trainer in Derby history to win the historic race four times. But for almost the entirety of Saturday's race, it looked like Bodemeister and jockey Mike Smith would deliver the win for Baffert. Bodemeister jumped out of the gate and set the pace early -- an impossible pace indeed, setting records at the first five fractions.

Heading into the final turn, Bodemeister paced the field by about five lengths just inside a pack led by Trinniberg -- a sprinter who was expected to lead early -- that jockey Willie Martinez rode just behind Bodemeister from the starting gate to the apex of the final turn.

But when Smith reached back in the homestretch, Bodemeister had given too much, too soon and had nothing left. I'll Have Another's run from the outside of the outside pack was hellacious, using the cache saved up from an easy first mile to blow past the field.

The eventual winner still trailed a few lengths in the race's final 100 yards, even if the end result -- an unchallenged pass on Bodemeister's outside -- seemed inevitable at that point.

I'll Have Another won the Santa Anita Derby in his last outing on April 7, becoming the last horse to win both the Santa Anita and Kentucky derbies since Sunday Silence in 1989. Like Saturday, I'll Have Another sat back as the pace was set before charging around to win with a late overtake.
