The ax began to fall on college football coaches when Idaho's Robb Akey became the first FBS coach to get fired this season.
Idaho announced on Sunday that Akey has been relieved of his coaching duties.
The announcement comes one day after Idaho lost to Louisiana Tech 70-28, a game in which Tech amassed 839 yards of offense.
Offensive coordinator Jason Gesser, a former quarterback at Washington State, has been named the interim head coach.
Akey's record at Idaho was 20-50, including 1-7 this year. The Vandals were 8-5 and won the Humanitarian Bowl in 2009, but they are 3-17 since the start of the 2011 season.
"The President (Duane Nellis) and I believe it is important to make this move now so we can immediately begin the process of hiring a new coach for the 2013 season," said Idaho athletic director Rob Spear in a statement. "We appreciate Coach Akey's enthusiasm and dedication to the University of Idaho but this is the right move at this time."
