How the Miami Heat will pay tribute to Jose Fernandez

The tragic death of Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez is still being felt and mourned throughout the sports world. That’s especially true in Miami, where Fernandez was just beginning to build a legacy that may have ultimately put him into a class with other sports legends like Dan Marino and Dwyane Wade. He was that good, and he was only 24.

In the hours following Fernandez’s death, the Miami Dolphins and Miami Hurricanes football teams did their part to honor him with on-field and symbolic tributes. Now the NBA’s Miami Heat is joining hands with a grieving community, revealing special warm up shirts honoring Fernandez that will be worn before Tuesday’s exhibition game against the Brooklyn Nets.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, Fernandez had been a regular at Heat games, where he cheered with the same joy and fervor that defined his passion for baseball and zest for life. His presence will be missed there, just as his presence will always be missed by those who had the joy of knowing him or just watching him.

“It was a devastating blow to all of us in South Florida,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said before the game. “And our hearts go out to his family and everybody at the Marlins. It’s so tragic for a player so young.”

“But we also want to acknowledge the other two gentlemen that were on that boat, as well, and their families. So really this night is to honor him, show respect to the families, but also the other two gentlemen and their families.”

The Heat tribute will also include a moment of silence as Miami and all of South Florida take the next big step in the healing process.
