Discarded by the San Diego Padres, Hoffman is thought to prefer Southern California, having spent 15½ of his 16 big-league seasons in San Diego.
Hoffman earned $7.5 million last season. The Padres offered less than $5 million to return in 2009, then rescinded the offer.
Hoffman, who accumulated all but two of his career 554 saves with the Padres, had 30 saves last season, but his 3.77 ERA was his highest in 13 years. He turned 41 in October.
