Henniger, Kent St run away from W Carolina 72-59

KENT, Ohio (AP) -- Mark Henniger scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Kent State to a 72-59 victory over Western Carolina in a Coaches vs. Cancer Classic matchup in Kent, Ohio Thursday night.

After Brandon Boggs hit a jumper to pull Western Carolina (3-3) within four, 40-36, the Golden Flashes went on a 16-4 run capped by Darren Goodson's layup with 7:33 to play to blow the game open. The Catamounts wouldn't get closer than 14 down until Josh Mendenhall hit a pair of free throws with :07 remaining to close the scoring.

Western Carolina opened up an 18-7 lead with 7:55 left in the first half but Kent State (4-1) scored 14 of the next 16, taking a 25-20 lead and never trailed again. The Golden Flashes led by as much as 19 in the second half.

Tawaski King led WCU with 17 points and nine rebounds.
