Henderson not fazed by Vikings' interest in Bishop
First, there were rumors this offseason the Minnesota Vikings could be a landing spot for former Chicago Bears middle linebacker Brian Urlacher.
Now, the Vikings are at least checking out veteran Desmond Bishop, who was released Monday by the NFC North rival Green Bay Packers.
Even if Bishop is added to the mix, Erin Henderson believes the middle linebacker job in the Vikings’ 4-3 defense belongs to him. That’s how he has approached the entire offseason, even when the Urlacher buzz was out there before the eight-time Pro Bowl performer announced he was retiring.
“I'm playing the Mike," Henderson announced Tuesday after the Vikings’ first minicamp practice, according to Judd Zulgad of 1500 ESPN.
Bishop, who missed all last season with a torn hamstring tendon, is expected to arrive today and go through a tryout tomorrow. The NFL Network has reported he will also visit the Kansas City Chiefs where former Packers personnel man John Dorsey serves as general manager.
“It's cool," Henderson said. "I hope it goes well for him (and) the Vikings like what they see. Welcome him with open arms, welcome him to the team. Not really sure what it's about. I'm just employee No. 50, baby.
"You definitely need as many good players as you can have. You never know what's going to happen throughout the season. All the ebbs and flows and ups and downs (of) 16 games. People get beat up, people get injured, get hurt. So it's always good to have people that can come in and play."
The Vikings moved Henderson inside after Jasper Brinkley departed via free agency. Adding Bishop would certainly bulk up the position for the team.
