LONDON -- Round-by-round coverage of David Haye's WBA, WBC and WBO cruiserweight unification title win over Enzo Maccarinelli in London on Saturday night.
|MARTIN ROGERS' UNOFFICIAL SCORECARD|
A very cagey opening as both men look to stay out of trouble in the early stages. A stumble from Haye in the first minute gets the Welsh supporters excited – but the blow caught Haye on the hands and was not a telling strike. Haye got into his stride toward the end of the round, crouching low to deliver two nasty blows to the mid-section.
Rogers scores it 10-9, Haye
Pre-fight predictions suggested Haye would have the advantage in the early rounds – and that was borne out. Haye made his mark with a stunning overhand right at 1:36 that was to prove the crucial blow. Maccarinelli was clearly hurt and was powerless to prevent the onslaught that followed. The Englishman then moved in with a brutal flurry – and Maccarinelli had no answer. Haye sent him to the canvas with a right-left combination and as Big Macc staggered to his feet and stumbled around the ring referee, John Keane had no option but to call things to a halt.
