Washington Nationals outfielders Denard Span and Bryce Harper were out of the lineup Tuesday because of flu-like symptoms.
Manager Davey Johnson said before the game that neither player was able to tolerate food of any kind.
Johnson sent Span home to rest, leaving the Nationals with only two bench players.
The Nationals also started Tuesday's game without second baseman Danny Espinosa (wrist).
Johnson said Stephen Strasburg was one of the pitchers he asked to take extra batting practice pregame.
