Du'Vaughn Maxwell scored 20 points, and Hampton rallied from an eight-point deficit midway through the second half for a 64-59 victory at St. Peter's on Tuesday night.
The win was Hampton's second in two games and sent St. Peter's to its second loss in its home opener.
The Pirates were down 43-35 with just over 11 minutes left in the game but caught the Peacocks at 52-52 on Maxwell's dunk with 6:19 left in the game. Hampton took the lead for good, 54-52, on Maxwell's layup at the 5:14 mark.
Hampton's lead was only 59-56 when Maxwell gave the Pirates a five-point cushion on a tip follow with under two minutes left.
St. Peter's guard Desi Washington hit a 3-pointer with 1:04 remaining to cut the deficit to two, but the Peacocks got no closer. Freshman guard Lawrence Cooks sealed it for the Pirates with two free throws with seven seconds remaining.
Cooks scored 12 points and was the only Pirates player other than Maxwell in double figures.
Senior guard Chris Burke finished with 13 points for St. Peter's, but just two came after halftime. He also had 11 rebounds. The only other player in double figures for the Peacocks was junior forward Marvin Dominique with 12 points.
