Giants, Tigers tied 3-3 after 6 innings
DETROIT -- Four games into the World Series, the Tigers finally took a lead as Miguel Cabrera's two-run home run put Detroit ahead of the San Francisco Giants 2-1 after five innings Sunday night in Game 4 at Comerica Park.
But the Giants regained the lead 3-2 on on Buster Posey's two-run home run in the top of the sixth before Delmon Young tied it 3-3 with a solo homer for Detroit in the bottom of the sixth.
The Tigers were never in front as the Giants won the first three games of the best-of-seven series to put themselves on the brink of a second World Series title in three years. However, Cabrera changed that with one swing of the bat in the third inning, aided by some from the blustery conditions that saw winds gusting as high as 27 mph.
Cabrera hit what looked like a routine pop up to right field off the bat off Giants ace Matt Cain. However, the ball kept carrying until it landed in the first row of seats for Cabrera's second home run in 54 plate appearances this postseason.
Cabrera won the American League Triple Crown in the regular season as he batted .330 with 44 home runs and 139 RBIs. He was the first player to lead his league in all three categories since Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski in 1967.
With the Tigers trailing 1-0, Austin Jackson drew a one-out walk in the third and moved to second when Quintin Berry grounded out while unsuccessfully trying to bunt for a base hit. Cabrera followed with his home run, making him 3-for-11 in the World Series.
Cabrera's hit was just the Tigers' second in 12 at-bats with runners in scoring position in the series.
The homers continued to fly as Posey homered off Tigers starter Max Scherzer with one out in the sixth after Marco Scutaro had singled.
Young then tied it with a soilo homer off Cain with two outs in the bottom of that inning.
The Giants struck for a quick run off Scherzer in the second inning. Hunter Pence hit a double that bounced over the fence in right-center field with one out, and Brandon Belt drove the next pitch off the right-field fence for a triple.
Scherzer allowed only the one run and four hits in five innings. He struck out six and walked one.
Cain allowed two runs and three hits through five innings with two strikeouts and three walks.
Though the Tigers had the lead, history was not on their side. A total of 23 teams have fallen behind 3-0 in the World Series, but none has ever come back to win, and just three have even extended the series beyond a fourth game.
The Tigers were without catcher Alex Avila, who was scratched from the original lineup because of a bruised left forearm. He was injured in Game 3 on Saturday night when struck by a foul ball.

Game 5, if necessary will be played Monday night at 8:07 ET with left-hander Barry Zito starting for the Giants against Justin Verlander.
