Giants closer Romo avoids charges in airport incident
No criminal charges will be filed against San Francisco Giants reliever Sergio Romo after a New Year's Day incident in the Las Vegas airport.
Police cited Romo for creating a disturbance before boarding a flight when he confronted airport security at a checkpoint at McCarran International Airport. Romo, who reportedly was under the influence of alcohol, was handcuffed and detained for a short time after failing to show proper identification but was released and boarded his flight.
Prosecutors in Nevada chose not to pursue charges, said Tess Driver, a district attorney spokeswoman. Romo could have faced six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
"We simply do not have the manpower or resources to go forward on every case submittal we receive and must weigh the value, provability and seriousness of each case accordingly," she told the San Francisco Chronicle.
Romo, 29, finished the 2012 season as the Giants' closer, saving 14 of 15 save opportunities and going a perfect four of four in the postseason, including three in the World Series.
Romo issued an apology for his actions, saying he regretted bringing negative attention to the Giants' organization.
"I love and respect the Giants, my teammates and our fans, and I promise to conduct myself in the future in the 'San Francisco Giants Way,' " he said.
