Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee, who is retiring after making controversial remarks critical of Notre Dame and Southeastern Conference members, will receive a package worth $5.8 million through June of 2018, the Columbus Dispatch reported.
That package includes a base salary of $410,000 per year, as he continues working as president emeritus, according to information released by the university.
Gee also receives a one-time, $1.5 million payment for agreeing to release the university "from any and all claims Dr. Gee has or may have against the University for any compensation or benefits."
The university also will set aside $800,000 in a retirement plan to be paid to Gee when he does leave the university.
Gee, 69, retired July 1, soon after reports of remarks he made to the university's Athletic Council in December. The comments were critical of Notre Dame, the Big Ten and the University of Arkansas football coach.
