Sam left off Rams' practice squad

St. Louis (AFP) - Michael Sam, who is trying to become the NFL's first openly gay player, remained without a team Monday, two days after being cut by the St. Louis Rams.

Sam, a seventh-round pick in this year's National Football League draft who publicly declared his homosexuality prior to the draft, was left off the Rams' 10-man practice squad on Monday.

Sam appears to be the victim of a numbers game, with the Rams already carrying five defensive ends on their active roster and short on depth at other positions.
