Carolina goaltender Cam Ward suffered a lower-body injury while stretching to make a save in the first period of Thursday night's game against the Minnesota Wild and will be sidelined for three to four weeks, the team announced.
Ward left about four minutes into the first period and did not return. The 29-year-old veteran was hurt while stopping a shot by Wild forward Mikael Granlund on a power play.
Granlund's shot went wide and Ward was slow to get back up on his skates. At the next stoppage of play, he left the ice and headed to the locker room. Ward made five saves before departing.
Justin Peters, making his season debut, replaced Ward in goal. Anton Khudobin, the Hurricanes' regular backup goalie, is out with a lower-body injury.
Ward, who was coming back from offseason knee surgery, had won his past two starts. He entered the game with a 2-2 record, a 2.84 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage this season.
