Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier moved quickly to diffuse any quarterback controversy, saying Christian Ponder is the team's unquestioned starter.
Matt Cassel was signed to a one-year, $4 million contract last week, but Frazier said it was with the clear understanding that the veteran was brought in as "insurance" in case of injury to Ponder.
"Christian Ponder is our starting quarterback. Matt knows that, he knew it when we went through the acquisition," Frazier told the NFL Network from the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix.
"(Cassel) knows that he's coming in to provide insurance for us. If something were to happen to Christian injury-wise, we have a quality backup that can step in and do a great job for us. Christian just needs to continue to improve like we all expect him to, but he's our starting quarterback."
Ponder has a lengthy list of major and minor injuries dating back to his days at Florida State. He missed the Vikings' playoff game last season due to an elbow injury.
Cassel was signed last week following his release by the Kansas City Chiefs. A Pro Bowl selection in 2010, he threw six touchdowns against 12 interceptions in nine games last season and lost his starting job to Bradie Quinn.
