Buffalo Sabres forward Ville Leino is out indefinitely after suffering a broken rib on Wednesday night during a 2-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings in a season opener.
Sabres coach Ron Rolston said Leino was hurt in the first period but remained in the game. The extent of the damage was determined until he was examined before Thursday's practice.
The injury-plagued Leino was limited to eight games last season because of a hip injury and missed 10 games during the 2011-12 season with a broken foot.
The Sabres play the Ottawa Senators at home on Friday night.
